This week is a special week for folks at work. It’s the International Week of Happiness at Work, where efforts are made all over the globe to make happiness at work the rule, not the exception. Now, considering the average person spends more than 90,000 hours of their lifetime at work, we’d say the workplace plays a huge part in our lives. It affects our mood, our decisions, our interactions and even life outside of work, such as marital issues or work-related stress. Happiness in the workplace should be a priority for all organisations because, well, happy employees are better employees. Here are 8 tips to help spread some happiness at work this week (and for the rest of the year)!

Smile and spread some positivity

There’s a reason they say a smile is contagious. It makes everyone feel a little better - people automatically empathise with a smile and, whether they like it or not, consciously or unconsciously, they’re smiling with you. Plus, when you smile, your brain releases neuropeptides, elevating your mood. Win win.

Start an initiative to give more positive feedback

Feedback is a great way for employees to grow, progress and succeed. Advocating for more positive feedback encourages people to develop, commit and contribute more to the work. It also empowers people and the workplace is seen to have a positive culture of growth and learning.

Make friends and socialise!

Why not go out for lunch together instead of having it at your desk? Or organise some evening drinks with some colleagues? Socialising will inevitably create stronger bonds and better relationships, and this can be invaluable in a workplace environment.

Ask for advice and take charge of your own personal development

Ask for meaningful help for your own development and progression - you’re in charge of your own success. Knowing you’re doing well, on the right track, or hitting those goals will only motivate and drive you to be happy and successful at work.

Reward yourself (and others!)

Work can often be fast-paced and stressful - sometimes it can be easy to get caught up in the office whirlwind. Take some time to reflect on your day, your week and your goals. Give yourself little rewards and perks for reaching a personal milestone; it can help you manage the load and make you happier. Don’t forget to recognise others’ efforts too!

Play games and have some fun

Games are always great fun, and it’s a great way to get to know your colleagues. Make them different and fun by being out of your seats, away from your desks. It might even help you burn some calories - hello healthier workplace.

Limit negativity

The people you surround yourself with have a large impact on your mood and reaching your goals. It’s best to stay away from gossip, unnecessary complaints and rude coworkers - surrounding yourself with people who are positive and uplifting, making your time at work much more delightful.

Bring in some treats!

Sometimes a sugary pick-me-up is all that’s needed to lift the office mood. Surprise your colleagues with a delicious cake, homemade biscuits or M&S cupcakes to brighten up their day - we’re sure it’ll make them smile.
