Dubai Police to use AI to reduce crime
6 Jan 2019
With some of the lowest crime rates in the world, Dubai is one of the safest places to be. But, to continue with this title, Dubai finds itself turning to Artificial Intelligence to help in combating crime. Through data analysis services, Dubai Police will be able to predict crime and traffic accidents by 2031, continuing to make the city one of the safest in the world.
So have you heard? Dubai Police aim to incorporate AI systems in all levels of policing, in a bid to forecast crimes and traffic incidents before they even happen - and to develop the best techniques to amalgamate human interaction and AI to make Dubai safer and happier. This ‘Strategic Plan for Artificial Intelligence’ will see the government agency integrate AI technology to run all of its services by 2031.
Through analysing previously reported crimes and accidents, AI will be utilised to predict actual crimes and accidents, preventing them before they take place. Further, using Interpol’s extensive database, Dubai Police will be a fighting force in counter-terrorism, a move announced during the 87th Interpol General Assembly in Dubai. During the event, Dubai police also displayed their latest SWAT tactical diving-suit and rescue sub, both of which will be used to combat crime under water.
The UAE’s Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, aims to make the UAE the first in the world to invest in AI in various vital sectors. The strategic plan of the Dubai Police aims to achieve the objectives to optimize and implement development programmes and projects relying on AI across all areas of police and to successfully serve the needs of the citizens of Dubai.
The strategic plan seeks to integrate AI surveillance, predictive policing and robotics to assist customer service centres, smart police stations, community service centres, criminal investigation, traffic safety, road security, disaster management and even forensics. The AI techniques, which now play an integral role in the UAE, contribute to efficiency, management and achieving qualitative development in the overall performance of government departments.
Recently, Dubai Police also announced plans for Future Societies 5.0, a summit of AI-led policing that aims to become the premier platform for inter-force technological advancement. Taking place in April 2019, the summit will be the first dedicated event highlighting the innovation and benefits of digital technology to transform modern cities into safer societies.
With the recent announcement of plans to use drones, driverless patrol cars and facial recognition integrated within CCTV surveillance cameras, we can’t wait to experience an integrated, safer, happier Dubai!
